Killer silkworm advances: 1.5 million hectares of forests in Siberia and Altai under threat
Siberia and Altai have faced one of the most serious natural threats in recent years. The nun moth caterpillar is rapidly destroying coniferous and deciduous forests. According to the latest data, the pest has already affected hundreds of plant species, including gardens and valuable tree species. The scale of the problem is enormous—1.5 million hectares are under threat.
Forest treatment is being actively carried out in the regions. More than 1 billion rubles have been allocated for these purposes. However, experts warn: the fight will be long and difficult.
Main causes of the outbreak:

- Mild winters that allow pests to survive the cold period
- Spread of the insect from neighboring regions
If the infestation is not stopped now, the consequences could be catastrophic: loss of forest areas, disruption of the ecosystem, and enormous economic damage.
