In July 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump carried out one of the boldest self-evacuation operations in the modern history of the White House. After the NATO summit in Ankara, he demonstratively boarded the old Air Force One under the lenses of cameras—and a few minutes later was already hiding in a catering container that usually transports food onto aircraft. That is how the American leader secretly transferred to a military C-32A and left Turkey under the threat of an assassination attempt by Iran. What initially looked like a routine aircraft swap turned into a genuine cover operation, which the world only learned about a month later.
How the operation unfolded
Trump arrived at the NATO summit in Turkey on a new Boeing 747-8 — a luxurious aircraft gifted by Qatar that had already earned the Air Force One designation. However, after the resumption of American strikes on Iran, intelligence received information about a credible threat to the president's life and his aircraft. The new jet, according to some reports, had not yet received a full suite of missile defense systems, so the security team made an emergency decision.
Publicly, Trump announced that, "for old times' sake," he would fly on the classic blue-and-white Air Force One. He climbed the stairs in front of journalists, waved — and vanished. A few minutes later, the president and several of his closest aides exited through a door on the opposite side of the plane straight into a catering truck container raised by hydraulics. The vehicle lowered, drove a short distance across the tarmac, and delivered them to a nearby C-32A — the military variant of the Boeing 757 typically used to transport senior officials.
The old Air Force One, with the press and some White House staff on board, became a decoy. The journalists had no idea they were flying without the president. The decoy aircraft headed to the United Kingdom, while the real Trump was already airborne on the C-32A under the call sign Reach 18. In Britain, he again transferred discreetly, then openly moved to the Qatari aircraft and returned to Washington.
Why it happened now
The operation was a direct consequence of the escalation between the United States and Iran. After the collapse of negotiations, Washington resumed strikes, and Tehran, according to American sources, intensified plans to eliminate "number one" on its target list. Trump himself later half-jokingly told journalists: "I'm always number one to them. If I go — you go with me."
The episode exposed several painful issues at once: the vulnerability of the new "Qatari" Air Force One, the speed with which the Secret Service can improvise, and how far the administration is willing to go to protect the president in conditions of real war.
